Statement in Support of DACA, March 4, 2018

The National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP) stands with DREAMers and students currently protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).  The NSHP is deeply concerned by the cancellation of DACA and about the future of nearly 800,000 DACA recipients, 90% of whom   are from Latin America.

The STEM fields, including physics, represent an array of intellectually challenging disciplines and our modern civilization depends on the technology made possible by the discoveries of science, engineering, and mathematics. In a time when the future prosperity and security of our country depends more and more on technological innovations, the United States needs to nurture talent and produce more STEM professionals that are trained and retained in our country.

The NSHP is committed to creating opportunity and advancements for all students. DACA students studying physics and other STEM disciplines are individuals who will be gainfully employed and who will contribute to the economy and security of the nation. In addition to the more than 240,000 DACA students in college, some estimates place the number of teachers who are protected by DACA as 20,000. The US cannot afford to lose this wealth of talent, experience and fierce dedication to our country.

The NSHP urges Congress to pass a clean Dream Act to provide a permanent solution for these young people. Also, it can be an essential step forward in enacting comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
